Section 01
What does market simulation actually do?
Market simulation models how a defined population may respond to an intervention: a new price, product concept, message, feature, market entry, or competitor move. It produces directional distributions and hypotheses for real validation; it does not prove an exact future conversion rate.
| Team | What-if question | Useful output |
|---|---|---|
| Founders | What if we launch this product at $49? | Problem, message, price, and segment risks |
| Product managers | What if we prioritize feature A over B? | Workflow impact, adoption friction, roadmap hypotheses |
| Marketing | What if we position around the outcome instead of the feature? | Comprehension, category fit, objections |
| UX researchers | What if we change the task or onboarding flow? | Likely confusion points and interview probes |
| Pricing teams | What if we move from seats to usage pricing? | Elasticity patterns and packaging objections |
| Strategy and innovation | What if we enter this segment or channel? | Scenario risks, incumbents, and wedge hypotheses |
| Investors | What if the company's core assumption is wrong? | Diligence questions, not an investment verdict |
Section 02
How should a team write a simulation question?
- Define the population: role, industry, company size, location, income, and relevant context.
- Define the intervention: what changed and compared with which alternative?
- Define the decision: what will you do differently if the signal is positive, mixed, or negative?
- Ask for behavior and objections, not generic enthusiasm: what would they do, pay, switch, delay, or reject?
- Name the real-world test that will confirm the leading hypothesis.
Section 03
What simulation cannot tell you
Simulation cannot establish exact revenue, guarantee launch behavior, replace regulated research, or remove the need to speak with real customers. Its highest-value role is reducing the search space: compare options, surface objections, identify segment conflict, and spend human research budget where uncertainty remains.
